When she found out she had cancer, American radio personality Robin Quivers didn’t shed a single tear, but she couldn’t help but choke up when she spoke of the company her good buddy kept during her treatment.

Robin Ophelia Quivers was born on August 8, 1952, in Pikesville, Maryland, to her brother, Charles Jr., and two adoptive brothers, Howard and Harry. In 1974, Robin earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Maryland. The 66-year-old author began her career at the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services System’s Maryland Shock Trauma unit.

In 1975, Robin enlisted in the United States Air Force and was assigned to the rank of second lieutenant. Robin was promoted to first lieutenant after six months of service, and by June 1978, she had attained the rank of captain. A month later, she was discharged and remained a member until 1990.

Robin moved to Baltimore in 1979 to study at the Broadcasting Institute of Maryland, where she landed her first job as a newscaster in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She ultimately found a job as a consumer reporter at WFBR, where she read the news alongside Johnny Walker, the morning disc jockey.

Robin shared her 15-month cancer fight in 2013, which she discovered when she went to the ER after being unable to urinate. The physicians informed her that she had a malignant growth in her pelvic region that had a 10% probability of survival.

Robin informed Howard of her poor condition, and she admitted that he was overcome with sorrow at learning of her cancer. He was much more concerned about her health than she was, she claimed.

Robin did say that she had surgery to remove a large tumor pressing on her bladder in May 2012, while keeping the fact that she was sick hidden from the show. Howard was so distraught when he learned about Robin’s cancer that he threatened to quit broadcasting if she didn’t survive.
