In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Wyatt Russell plays John Walker, a US spy who takes up Captain America’s mantle after Sam Wilson (The Falcon) declines the shield.
Russell became a meme almost immediately after the first episode of the show aired. It didn’t end there, though. Since then, the actor has been used as a punching bag, with some venomous fans even threatening his life.
Death Threats Have Been Made Against Wyatt Russell
One of the most beloved performances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was Chris Evans’ portrayal of Steve Rogers (MCU). From becoming the first Avenger to playing a key part in the MCU for nearly a decade, he had a devoted following.
Dozens of venomous fans threatened the actor’s life solely for playing a character in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Given how the character is shown in the series, it’s fair that he’s loathed, but things got out of hand when the hatred wasn’t restricted to Walker.
Russell doesn’t have any social media profiles, but it didn’t stop his fan pages from being targeted by nasty fans. Other fans defended the actor, claiming that the fact that his character was so reviled just served to highlight how wonderful a job he did portraying Walker.
John Walker is a character you may despise or dislike. Sending death threats and vitriol to Wyatt Russell, an ACTOR/HUMAN with feelings, is just wrong. Also, wyatt’s hatred for John Walker just goes to show how talented he is as an actor. He is deserving of better.
Russell has been subjected to such treatment for a long time as a result of his involvement in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but he isn’t the first member of the MCU ensemble to do so. Actors like Don Cheadle, Robert Downey Jr., and Brie Larson have gone through something similar before him.
It’s never been reported, but MCU performers have always received a disproportionate number of hate mail and death threats:
Brie Larson is a well-known actress. Hayley Atwell is a British actress.
Emily VanCamp is a writer who lives in the United States
Anthony Mackie is an actor who plays the role of Anthony Mac In addition, Wyatt Russell has just made a name for himself.
Even Lexi Rabe, who played Tony Stark’s daughter in Avengers: Endgame, had to plead with fans not to mistreat her. When she was barely seven years old, fans advised her mother that she needed to be taught how to act in public.
Russell claims that playing with polarizing people is enjoyable. Despite the animosity thrown towards Russell, the actor claims that one of the things he admired about Walker was how divisive he was.
He went on to say that polarizing people was fun to play, but that he and Marvel Studios were not attempting to replace Chris Evans’ Captain America. You sort of go your own way, and I suppose… It’s a lot of fun for people to put on a character and say, “Well, you’re not that guy,” and you think to yourself, “Well, that’s kind of the point.”
Russell also noted in an interview with Variety that being the Marvel punching bag for a while was fun.
