Some Hollywood celebrities are born into the business. Dakota Johnson, on the other hand, is a unique character.
The actress’s family tree is almost entirely made up of actors and Hollywood heavyweights, as seen in the film Persuasion. She was born into a Hollywood royal family and grew up idolizing the industry. However, believing she had an easy path to stardom would be a stretch. Even though she clearly inherited acting genes, she carved her own path to fame.
Dakota Johnson’s Family Tree Is Filled With Celebrities
Dakota Johnson was born in Austin, Texas, on October 4, 1989, to actor parents Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith. They divorced in 1996, and she is their only child. While Don’s paternal grandparents were not actors (his father was a farmer and his mother a beautician), Dakota’s maternal grandparents were. Tippi Hedren and Peter Griffith were Griffith’s parents.
Tippi (full name: Nathalie Kay Hedren) is a successful former fashion model and actress who has featured on the covers of Glamour and Life magazines and starred in films with Alfred Hitchcock. She was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Jules Verne Award.
Peter, too, began his career as an actor on Broadway as a child, but eventually transitioned to advertising. Before his death in 2001, he worked as an advertising executive.
While Melanie was Peter’s only child from his first marriage to Tippi, he had two additional children from his second marriage to Nanita Greene: Tracy Griffith and Clay A. Griffith. Tracy went on to become an actress as well, while Clay pursued a career in set design.
Melanie began acting when she was a child, in a Hitchcock film in which her mother starred. She received her first major acting role at the age of 17 in Arthur Penn’s Night Moves, and she later appeared in 1981’s Roar alongside her mother.
Dakota has six step-siblings in addition to her biological siblings
She has two half-brothers and half-sisters on her mother Melanie’s side: Alexander Griffith Bauer (born August 22, 1985) and Stella del Carmen Banderas (born on September 24, 1986).
She has four step-siblings on her father’s side: half-brothers Jesse Wayne (born December 7, 1982), Jasper (born June 6, 2002), Deacon Johnson (born April 29, 2006), and half-sister Atherton Grace Johnson (born December 7, 1982). (born on December 28, 1999).
Stella, Grace, and Jesse, among her step-siblings, have already made a name for themselves in Hollywood. Grace is a model, entrepreneur, and actress, and Jesse is a producer and musician with some acting experience. Stella is a model signed with IMG Models, and Jesse is a producer and musician with some acting experience.

Dakota Johnson’s parents discouraged her from pursuing a career in acting
Dakota was in a unique position to launch her acting career by leveraging her family. The actress almost grew up on set, seeing renowned actors perform flawlessly.
Don and Melanie, on the other hand, were not enthusiastic on their daughter pursuing a career in Hollywood at such a young age. They wanted Dakota to “enjoy as much of a childhood as I could,” as she expressed it in a January 2022 interview with W Magazine. Dakota, on the other hand, “couldn’t wait” to start her career as an actor. She even had a little back-and-forth with her father about it.
Don wanted her to go to college after high school. Dakota, on the other hand, was adamantly opposed. But if she didn’t go to college, he wouldn’t support her financially — a pact he struck with all five of his children.
She applied to Juilliard with trepidation but was turned down. Instead of going to acting school, she continued to work. She described having “like, $47” in her bank account and not being able to buy groceries during an interview with SiriusXM’s Stars. It was the path she had chosen, and she had no regrets.
She scored a small role in 2010’s The Social Network just months after leaving her father’s payroll. Her roles have gotten gradually bigger since then, and her stature has risen in tandem.
