Malcolm was born on September 3, 1963, in Fareham, Hampshire, United Kingdom. After his parents relocated to Canada in quest of a larger piece of land, he grew up in rural Ontario.

Graham Gladwell, his father, was a civil engineer with an English background. Meanwhile, his mother, Joyce Gladwell, was of Jamaican heritage and worked as a psychologist.

In a 2013 interview with Esquire, the renowned New Yorker columnist revealed that his parents were evicted from their London flat not long after he was born. The Landlady had told his father at the time of giving the eviction notice:

As he grew older, so did the racial slurs shouted at him. He was called the ‘N-word’ while waiting for a bus to take him and his mother home when he was six years old.

Not only that but as a young man, he was constantly profiled by the police. When he was held by three police officers in New York after the cops misdiagnosed him in a rape case, he was subjected to profiling.

Initially, the 54-year-old planned to go to graduate school and work in the advertising industry. When neither of them worked out, he went to work for The American Spectator as a journalist.

Later, he began contributing to publications such as The Washington Post and The New Yorker. His two New Yorker articles, The Tipping Point and The Coolhunt were later turned into a book called The Tipping Point, which was published in 2000.

The Tipping Point was named one of the greatest books of 2000 by Amazon.com, The AV Club, The Times, and The Guardian. Time Magazine named him one of the World’s 100 Most Influential People in 2005. In 2005, he published his second book, Blink, which was listed in Fast Company’s list of the Best Business Books of 2005.

In the years after the publication of his second book, he would write three additional books: Outliers (2008), What the Dog Saw (2009), and David and Goliath (2010). (2013).

His net worth is estimated to be approximately $30 million, thanks to the sales of his books and infrequent appearances as a guest speaker.
