Snell was selected in the first round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft by the Tampa Bay Rays. He made his impact with the Rays, pitching for the Gulf Coast Rays, where he went 12–2 with a 3.08 ERA in 11 games (eight beginnings). Snell returned to Bowling Green in 2014 and was promoted to the Charlotte Stone Crabs in May.
He pitched a rain-shortened no-hitter against the Daytona Cubs on August 2. It was the first no-hitter in the history of baseball. Between the two clubs, he was 8–8 with a 3.19 ERA in 24 complete games. He was named the Rays Minor League Pitcher of the Year at the end of the season.
