She earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Psychology and Education from Brooklyn College, and then went on to Columbia University to pursue a Master’s degree in Developmental Psychology. Putting her degree to good use, she began her career as a college professor and NYC public school teacher, specializing in special education for children with emotional and intellectual disabilities. Her career took a sharp turn when she decided to seek a Juris Doctor degree.
She worked as an attorney for several legal companies after graduation. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani selected her as a judge of the City of New York’s Criminal Court in 1995, then three years later she was appointed as the Acting Justice of the State Supreme Court, 2nd Judicial District in 1998.
She was elected to the Supreme Court of Kings County in 2002 after reaching such heights in the judicial profession. She received the Catholic Lawyers Guild’s Distinguished Judiciary Award in 2013 and was named “Woman of the Year” by the New York State Supreme Court Officers Association and “Woman of the Year” by the New York State Court Officers Association in 2014. The Italian Charities of America named her “Woman of the Year” in 2016.
She has been involved in a number of other high-profile cases over her career, including murders and other crimes against minors, as well as hate crimes. In 2014, she became well-known after appearing on the show Hot Bench, a courtroom program in which three judges seek justice by debating the merits of cases in an amusing and educational manner.
