Carter and her lawyer husband are said to have married in a small wedding ceremony in 2005. The former marriage has two children: Mattai Jones, a daughter, and Cabral Jones, a son.

Despite having been married for 13 years, the pair chose to divorce. Their divorce was finalized in September after they separated in May 2018.

Carter had requested shared legal and physical custody of their two children, as well as spousal maintenance.
