Jay was born on December 27, 1981, to a military family such as Wendell Ramone Ellis Jr. He is the only child of Wendell Ellis Sr., who served in the Air Force. Paula, his mother, worked as a finance executive.
He attended 12 schools in 13 years before enrolling on a football scholarship at Concordia University in Portland, Oregon, where he also served as the student body president. He had always been a brilliant youngster and had previously worked as a public relations intern for the Portland Trail Blazers.
His love, however, was in modeling, therefore he began his modeling career after the internship. He worked for Nike, Adidas, and Columbia Sportswear, all of which are situated in Portland.
