Martie Allen, a former TV personality who is best known for being Kristy McNichol’s girlfriend, may not be well-known. Since 1991, they’ve been in a relationship.
McNichol, Allen’s girlfriend, is a well-known American actress who starred in a number of successful films and television shows in the 1980s and 1990s, including Little Darlings, Only When I Laugh, and Empty Nest. However, the actress’ celebrity was accompanied by mental health issues, which worsened to the point where she had to abandon her acting career for her own good.
Kristy McNichol, Martie Allen’s girlfriend, is dealing with mental illness
Kristy McNichol began her career as an actress as a child. She even won two Emmys for her portrayal of Buddy, the all-American tomboy on the hit show Family. However, as she approached adolescence, the actor became overwhelmed and began to experience anxiety episodes.
Her anxiety and tension evolved into depression when she was 20 years old.
“I was a complete disaster,” she admitted.
This happened while she was filming her seventh picture, Just The Way You Are, in France. During an exclusive interview with People in 1989, the actress revealed that she was confused, broken, anxious, and crying much of the time while filming the film in 1982.
I couldn’t eat, and I didn’t sleep much during my month in France. When I did fall asleep, I had odd dreams. I couldn’t stop crying. Crying nonstop. Anxiety that never stops. I was terrified, weeping, and perplexed, and I had no idea what was going on. I was in such bad shape. Trying to get through that film was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done.
Later, a friend advised the actress to seek assistance. She opted to take a break from filming after consulting with a psychiatrist and did not return to the set after a two-week Christmas vacation. She returned to work after a year to continue filming the film, but only after a year off.
Sadly, the hiatus she took for her mental health sparked alarming speculations. Substance misuse and manic depression were mentioned by many people and media outlets. Her case was not helped by the studio’s statement, which claimed she had a “chemical imbalance.”
During the same interview with People, Allen’s girlfriend disclosed that one of the key causes of her mental health problems was the intense pressure and expectations that came with growing up as a celebrity.
I’ve been a professional since I was a child, earning money and taking on duties. I didn’t grow up to be a child. I was a 30-year-old woman living in a 30-year-old body.
She also mentioned that a chunk of it was due to her parents’ divorce and the responsibility she received as a result.
After being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Kristy McNichol decided to leave acting
Everything looked to be going well for McNichol’s favorite actress, according to her fans. But they had no idea of the mental battles that the actress was going through.
Things worsened in 1992, when it was revealed that the Little Darlings actress was suffering from bipolar disease. After 1992, Kristy completely ceased acting and opted to focus on her mental health, despite the fact that she had already stopped appearing in movies.
Her doctor was a huge assistance to her while she went through extensive psychotherapy to manage her stress, anxiety, and depression. She appears to be nearly healed from her mental health troubles and is now living life to the fullest with her girlfriend at her side.
