Conrad Carter and Michelle Carter met in 2012 while on a family vacation in Florida. They were both visiting relatives in Florida and grew to be buddies. They only met a few times during the next three years and usually communicate via text and email. She and Conrad were in a long-distance relationship, despite the fact that they were only 35 miles away.
Conrad struggled with anxiousness throughout his high school years. His father allegedly physically beat him, while his grandfather allegedly verbally tortured him. Verdict, Punishment, and Court Proceedings
Michelle Carter was arrested and charged on February 4, 2015. At the time, she was 17 years old. She was charged with involuntary manslaughter in Taunton, Massachusetts, on February 5th in New Bedford Juvenile Court. The grand jury found enough evidence to charge her with facilitating the suicide “wantonly and carelessly.”
She was 17 years old at the time. She has, however, indicated that she is a ‘youthful offender’ rather than a ‘juvenile.’

Carter was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter by Judge Lawrence Moniz of the Bristol County Juvenile Court in Massachusetts on June 16, 2017. Prior to his ruling, he claimed that it was Carter’s phone talks with Roy as he was gassing himself in his truck, as reported in Carter’s texts to friends, that prompted him to commit suicide, rather than the preceding text messages.
Michelle Carter was sentenced on August 3, 2017, to a two-and-a-half-year sentence, with 15 months to be served in the Bristol County House of Corrections, the remainder suspended, and five years of probation to be served.
Following her lawyers’ plea for a delay of the sentence until all of Carter’s Massachusetts court appeals options had been exhausted, Judge Moniz granted the stay with the condition that she remain away from the Roy family.
Carter’s involuntary manslaughter conviction was upheld by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court on February 6, 2019, after the court determined that Carter behaved with criminal intent when she encouraged Roy to commit suicide.
