In the last 10-15 years, there has been a boom in visibility and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ population in the music industry, as people slowly accept and normalize the concept of different sexuality. Indie singer Phoebe Bridgers is one such artist who has unintentionally/intentionally assumed the position of a true gay icon.

Bridgers, who is openly bisexual, has accepted her sexuality with open arms while yet managing to avoid allowing it to define her as a person.

Bridgers: One Step at a Time, Breaking the Homosexual Stereotype

Ty Bennett of The Line Of Best Fit was able to see right through the “intentionally deranged narrator of “Killer” in a 2020 interview. Bridgers, the intoxicatingly intense author of Stranger in the Alps and Punisher, came across as a free-spirited soul, contrary to Bennett’s perception of him.

Despite the fact that the reporter was mistaken about Bridgers’ persona, she was overjoyed at her discovery. The stigma of being extremely flamboyant or a tomboy, which is often linked with anyone who does not fit into the “traditional” boy/girl bracket, has been tossed out the window, and Bridgers has used this to her advantage in becoming a gay icon.

She laughs easily and freely, and she is both unconstrained and measured in her laughter. She doesn’t over-analyze or over-talk; she isn’t sentimental or introspective, but she uses her words sparingly.
Bridgers took to Instagram on her coming out day to publish a photo of herself dressed as a guy with a mustache with a casual comment.

The ‘Motion Sickness’ singer wore a blue jacket over a basic white blouse on the stage of the coming out day procession, while her bottom half was dressed in blue shorts and black boots.

A pair of black aviator goggles with a golden frame and an unmistakable blonde mustache completed the ensemble. Despite the fact that the singer has not used her sexuality to gain notoriety, as many others in the industry have, she believes in speaking up for the LGBTQ+ community in places that matter.

Bridgers made waves in April 2020 when she teamed up with 1975, a prominent indie-pop band, to produce a new song called “Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America.” The song is devoted to the LGBTQ+ community, despite the religious and patriotic theme.

Bridgers revealed her love for a girl next door in the satirical lyrics of the beautiful song, but the language of the verses prior are such that the song is a rebellious tribute to Christianity and “love” for Jesus Christ.

I’m smitten with the girl who lives next door… Claire is her name… When she comes over to call, it’s nice… Then masturbate as soon as she’s gone.

When she’s not singing, she frequently uses her social media accounts to support the LGBTQ+ community as a whole. A tweet dated June 13, 2016, by Bridgers, in which he questioned the legal system, arguing that it was allowed to buy a rifle but prohibited to donate blood if a guy is gay.

Bridgers does not punch people in the face with a rainbow flag or put her sexuality in the forefront of her mind. Her bisexuality is simply a part of who she is. At the end of the day, most people find the singer’s character of quietly promoting and normalizing Queer people to be quite uplifting.
